Windows Updates Keep Failing

Once again, I'm having computer trouble. Yet, this time, this situation has baffled me. My Windows Updates tells me I need to install 12 important updates, so I install them. My computer prompts me to restart, I do so. My computer then tells me it's configuring the updates and prompts me to login. I login and I check to see if the updates have been installed. Strangely enough, the updates don't show up as installed, they show up as needed to still be installed. I have done that three times and am completely confused. Any suggestions?

Where do they show up? After you install them the little windows icon will appear in the system tray and if you click it it will listed the updates. This doesn't mean they are to be installed, but they have been.

When you go to windows update does it still show them or does it say "no new updates?" Also, did you go under windows update and under view update history does it list them there as being failed?

Also, I see you have COMODO. I have read somewhere that soemtimes that program will conflict with WU and not allow updates to install. It's possible that one can't install properly so none are. Try disabling that program seeing what happens. Plus if you have COMODO firewall, is your VISTA firewall on also. Two firewalls is not a good thing. This is a case where more is not better.

First of all, the key point is that the updates don't show as if I even installed them at all. They're not labeled as failed, they're just labeled as need to be downloaded even though I had previously installed them. It seems as if Windows doesn't even register that I had installed them. Second of all, my Vista Firewall is not on, but I will try disabling Comodo Firewall and see what happens.

Alright. I had turned off Comodo Firewall and tried to install the updates again, but with no luck. Any other suggestions?

I accidentally didn't follow the instructions right. I'm trying again. I'll get back to you as soon as possible.

I found this on the VISTA FORUMS website and the poster said he found it on the microsoft troublshooting pages.

1) Close all IE Windows
2) Control Panel -> Internet Options -> Delete Temporary Internet Files
3) Control Panel -> Admin Tools -> Services -> Stop the "Automatic Updates"
service
4) Delete everything in "C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution\DataStore"
5) Delete everything in "C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution\Download"
6) Control Panel -> Admin Tools -> Services -> START the "Automatic Updates"
service

Also, somewhere on these forums I remember reading about rename the software distribution file, but I haven't been able to locate it yet.

Hi SC,

I have the solution for you, as I encountered the same thing a few months back that prompt me to not use Comodo Firewall, you need to completely uninstall Comodo! This will allow you to install the windows updates. Go to Comodo forum if you need to verify. You must uninstall not disable. I did this for 2 months and I decided it didn't this.........anyway as a Comcast subscriber I now use McAfee and I have no problems with it.

Thanks for the advice. I'll uninstall Comodo and report back with my results. And I thought Comodo was a good firewall. :smileymad: Comodo knows about the bug, I'm guessing?

Just restarted my machine after uninstalling Comodo and attempting to install Windows Updates. I'll get back to you soon. Unfortunately, I'm stuck with Windows Firewall now. :smileysad: And I'm sorry to state my opinion on McAfee, but I'd never use their anti-virus, firewall or any other program because I've had a lot of problems with it. But Windows Firewall does do my computer justice.

I'm back and with good results. Your advice helped. Thank you so much for all your help. :smileyhappy: I was almost about to give up. Once again, thank you all for you time and help. I appreciate it greatly. I hope Comodo fixes that bug soon.
