Windows Updates & User Accounts

I decided to be good and run my pc day-to-day with a standard account. The problem however is that I do not recieve Windows Updates unless I sign in with the adminisrator account. I have tried to re-configure the standard account to no avail - it seems to think that it will receive the updates. It seems ridiculous that following MS's advice to use a standard account for security reasons means that you do not receive security updates... so I assume something is wrong. Any suggestions?

Garboesque :smileyhappy:

I`m not sure what you mean by a "Standard Account"

The 3 main Accounts are
Main Administrator Account.  This is normally hidden and you should not use it

Administrator Account.  This is the type of Account you should set up for yourself in Control Panel.  You need an Admin Account to do anything which would need permissions.

Limited Account.  As the name implies, this Account is very limited and you will be unable to make any system changes from this Account. Best suited for use of children when you need to stop then changing settings erc

Thanks but the user accounts in Vista are called 'Administrator' and 'Standard' - well at least in my version they are.

Sorry, I had forgotten that the name had changed, but a Standard Account is not much better than an XP Limited Account.  It is really to prevent other Users from making changes.

"When you use a standard account, you can use most programs that are installed on the computer, but you can't install or uninstall software and hardware, delete files that are required for the computer to work, or change settings on the computer that affect other users. If you're using a standard account, some programs might require you to provide an administrator password before you can perform certain tasks."

You would need to have an Administrator Account as well

I'll have to disagree with dunedin on this point. According to Microsoft, Standard Users in Vista have new privileges which "include the ability to view the system clock and calendar, to change the time zone, to modify wireless network security settings, to change power management settings, and to download and install critical updates from Windows Update".

Do you mean that under the Standard account that Windows Update will not Download the updates or simply that they will not install?

Rebel9 - when logged on with the standard account I receive nothing - it does not get to the point of downloading or installing - it is oblivious to the existence of Updates (critical or otherwise) - no notification or anything, as if I had disabled it completely. Only when I use the Administrator account does it dowload and, with my current Windows Updates settings. prompt me to instal. As you say, I understood that a Standard account should be able to receive critical updates - maybe you have to enter an administrator password to instal them - I don't know - but I thought I should at least be notified of their presence. Not a huge problem as I can just change the account to an administrator one - I was just trying to follow the recommended practice after years of using XP as an Administrator depsite the associated security risks. I guess these are somewhat diminished with Vista anyway.

That's a strange one. I can't find anything related to this problem but if I do, I'll post back. Perhaps someone else has an idea?

When clicking on  the Windows Update icon (on control panel or in the start menu) doesn´t give any message that it is needed a administrator aproval to continue??? It should ask for an aproval from an administrator, where the UACE comes up and requires a password??? That is what it happens when for example I try to open MSCONFIG with a standar account... I have now no standar account, but I tested on a diferent system and that´s what seems to happen...
