Windows Updates Which Haven't "Passed Windows Logo Testing"!
I have a Dimension 4400 which, until recently, was happy to download and install updates to Windows XP. About a week ago, the latest updates downloaded, and I clicked the bubble to install them, but, after they had installed apparently successfully, I got the error message:
"The software you are installing has not passed Windows Logo testing to verify its compatibility with Windows XP. The software will not be installed. Contact your system administrator."
Shortly after closing the error-message window, the updates started to download again, and this procedure has repeated itself five or six times over the past few days. I've tried downloading the updates manually, but with the same result.
It seems a bit odd that Microsoft is trying to download updates which haven't passed its Windows Logo testing and, quite frankly, this is all Greek to me. Any ideas, please? If it helps, I have Norton Internet Security, Spybot and Ad-aware 6.0 installed; could any of those be causing the problem?

See the fourth item under Problem Downloading/Installing a Software (Non-Driver) item here.

My thanks to all who responded to my plea for advice, and especially to Denny Denham. Denny's first suggestion - to rename C:\WINDOWS\system32\CatRoot2 - seems to have done the trick, and I've now downloaded and installed several Windows XP updates, though it wasn't entirely plain sailing.
My CatRoot2 folder doesn't contain any ".log" files, and both of its edb files (edb and edb00001) are text files, so I thought it best to leave them alone. The first time I attempted to rename the entire CatRoot2 folder, I received an error message telling me that it couldn't be renamed because it was a write-only folder but, strangely, I had no trouble renaming it when I tried again a couple of hours later. After that, the manual download and installation of the updates presented no problems (except the length of time it took, of course).
Perhaps I could ask a further couple of questions:
How would the file have become corrupted in the first place? I've been having recent problems with the machine freezing for no apparent reason, necessitating manual shut-downs - not even Ctrl Alt Delete would help;
Will my renaming of CatRoot2 (to CatRoottwo) have any deleterious effect on the operation of my PC?
Thanks again,
Ian

I don't know how the CatRoot2 folder gets corrupted but it is a common problem. Renaming it will have no effect on your computer's operation. In fact, many users simply delete the file. Windows will create a new one.
