Windows Vista Recovery Partition Files Missing
Hello there,
I have a Dell Vostro 1310 with Windows Vista Business installed on it. First of all I received a broken Operating System DVD from Dell. But my main concern is something else. My Windows crashed somehow and I tried using Recovery tool but it did not let me to restore back to Factory Settings as it used to give error while formattng the hard disk. Somehow I managed to use the Recovery tool to bring my laptop to the factory settings (took 6 hours) but the problem I am facing is that in My Computer I cannot see my Recovery Partition anymore, when I press F8 it does not give me the option for Recovery and nor Ctrl+F11 works. I used Disk Management and it shows me that the partition is still their but is fully empty that means it does not have the Recovery Image File in it. The Dell Utility has gone as well and just shows me an unallocatted 102mb partition.
My question is how come the Recovery Image is suddenly gone and why would that happen though I never touched the Recovery Partition and is their anyway to recover that because I just did a simple Factory Settings Restore?
I will really appreciate if someone can help me to fix my problem.
Regards
M. Janjua

I do understand what you mean, but my point is why would the recovery partition and the files disappear? The partition is there but is not visible and is empty. Also should I send my laptop back to Dell to recover the Partition Files as my laptop is still under warranty and it's just been 1 day since I got my laptop? Would Dell do that for me?
Thanks

you changed the master boot record(MBR) whenthat happens you also change all the pointers to where things are in the partition table. So inessence you wiped out the files..they are in fact still there it's just that the drive doesn't see them so it thinks it's empty.
The reality is you really don't need that partition. It's only function is to restore you system back the factroy settings, like the day you got it. This is in essence a reinstall. SO doing this you will loose all your programs and files unless backed up. You can do the same thing doing a complet reinstall using the Dell supplied recovery disks.

Is there a way to fix MBR (Master Boot Record) when running Windows Vista Business? I know that there is a way to fix that on Windows XP, but I coudn't find a fix for Windows Vista on the Dell website? Does anyone know a way to fix it without Windows Vista DVD as I haven't got one yet because it was broken.
Thanks
