oops, posting to this message board was an accident, but thanks for the help, Fireberd, I just got similar advice from someone else (change the USB controller settings), and I believe that has solved the problem.

This is not the Windows XP software forum.  This one is for MS Office issues.
 
However, you should be able to enter the BIOS and restore it to the default or factory settings.  That may take care of the problem.
 
Unfortunately you did not include your PC model number so no one can give you specific assistance - just offer general suggestions. 
 
If my reset suggestion does not fix it, you should repost on the Windows XP section.  And, always include your PC Model Number and Operating system on any initial problem post.

Not that it really matters, since the issue is apparently resolved, but the top of this page on my computer reads:
 
Software - Windows XP
No Events found!
