Windows XP - Automatic Updates

Have been receiving multiple Automatic Upgrades from Microsoft:

MSXML 4.0 SP2 Security Update (925672)

MSXML 4.0 SP2 Security Update (KB927978)

Have downloaded at least 100 times and still it continues.

Only happens on my Dell computer. No problem with laptop or son's computer both of which run XP.

Visited http://support.microsoft.com/kb927978 but found it unhelpful. Tried to contact microsoft support but was redirected to Dell as the OEM, sadly no help here without paying. Would be grateful if anybody could advise on a solution.

I would look in Add/Remove programs list and uninstall all versions of MSXML that are found. Sounds like you have multiple versions installed.

Then if you need this service download and install the latest version here

Check in control panel add/remove that those two updates are already installed. If they are they should be listed as MSXML 4.0 SP2 (KB925672) and MSXML 4.0 SP2 (KB927978).

If they are, uninstall them and restart your PC. Then I would recommend disabling automatic updates, go to the Microsoft Updates site, let it scan your PC. It should offer them; let it install them. Restart your PC. If you wish to use automatic updates, reenable it. If it still keeps offering them post back.

As recommended in both replies above; I turned off Automatic Updates; Uninstalled MSXML 4.0 SP2 Security Update (925672) and MSXML 4.0 SP2 Security Update (KB927978) using Add/Remove Programs.  I then visited the Microsoft Windows update site and updated my system (this only reloaded one of the MSXML updates.  I then turned Automatic Updates back on and the problem was resolved.

It will only have installed the second one because that superceded the first one. That's OK.
