Windows XP automatically closes software programs when Opening or Saving a File

Has anyone else had problems like this...

Windows XP automatically closes software programs when I trying to access a file in My Documents or My Pictures or even when I try to Open or Save a file.  This is occuring on many of the software programs I have loaded on my PC, to include AOL, Paint Shop Pro, Photoshop 7, UL Gif Animator, Animation Shop.  I've had these programs on this computer for the last two years and they were working just fine. But about 3 to 4 weeks ago, maybe a little longer, then following occured:

The software application would load up just fine but if I tried to Open a file via, let's say a file in Photoshop, it would automatically shutdown the whole application.  It also would automatically shutdown the program if I tried to Save a new file.

This problem is happening everytime I use these software programs. This is very frustrating and I can't seem to find an answer anywhere.  Could it have something to do with the Registry? Hope someone could shed some light on this.  Thanking you in advance for any help you can give.

Dee527,

The sudden onset of the problem causes me to suspect either virus activity or spyware. Do a full system antivirus scan with updated signatures to rule out the former.

For the latter, if you don't already scan for spyware, download Ad-aware from here, Spybot from here and Microsoft AntiSpyware from here. Check online for updates to their databases then run them and delete all the spyware they identify.

Thank you Denny for your response.  I did try what you suggested but unfortunately I still have the same problem.  Any other suggestions?

Run the XP system filer checker:
click start>run
type in: sfc /scannow
(space between sfc and /)
click ok

sfc will replace any missing/damaged XP system files. Insert XP CD if sfc requests it. Reboot when it's done.
