I have the exact same problem on a Dimension 3000 system, using Windows XP.  It seems to me that this problem came out of the blue and is affecting a lot of system. Can anybody help?

if you have a friend with a dell, all os cd's will work in a dell system.

Unfortunately no, boot restore doesn't work, not much does.  The real fix  is reinstalling the OS with the XP installation disks provided by Dell.........opps!.............that's right.........they don't!  The problem is getting these disks from Dell (which may take weeks).

I have come to the same conclusion that I need to repair the OS or reinstall it. I need to get a hold of the Windows XP Home Cd. Does anyone know if I can buy one from dell? I am running a Dimension 4500. I wonder if this problem has to do with Microsoft rolling out a new bunch of OS patches and something up my system
