Windows XP Error Message

I have a Dell Dimension 8400 and for awhile now every couple of days I recieve an error message.  Generally, after this message, over time, different parts of Windows stop working proplerly.  I usually reboot and this solves the problem until the next error message.  Often after the error message my option to restart or shutdown are not given.  Does anyone know what the problem is or how I can fix it.  Here is the error message exactly as it appears"

Windows – Application Error

The instruction at “0x7c918fea” referenced memory at “0x00000010”.  The memory could not be “written”.

Click on OK to terminate the program

Click on CANCEL to debug the program

Any help would be great!Thanks

Easy one here Matterd, FIRST thing you need to do is run  Scandisk. If this is a WinXP machine then open "My Computer", right click on "Local Drive C:", left click on "Properties", then left click on "Check Drive". It will give you 2 options, chose the second so that the entire drive will be checked for both a problem with WindowsXP, and with the sectors on your harddrive. After you have completed that step then run a full system Defrag, and finally after that is completed use System Tools under Accessories,
and choose "Disk Cleanup" I'm NOT going to guarantee that will resolve your particular problem, but it has worked in cases like yours before. Also worse comes to worse, you might (If the steps I told you don't work) have to purchase Norton's Systemworks 2005 Pro. The memory error your suffering is from appr. the middle platter of your HDD. This is a VERY common occurance with HDDs, just go with the steps I've outlined and it will write to the bad memory sectors so they will not cause any problems in the future.
