Windows XP - Finding bluetooth devices using a 3rd party dongle

I've got an Inspiron 1300, without Dell-installed Bluetooth. I've been using a Dongle to communicate with my mobile phone, via the Dongle Software and send addresses backwards and forwards one at a time via object push. Looking at Windows it looks as though I should be able to send address files directly once Bluetooth is installed but I can't get Windows XP to recognize any devices. As far as I can tell the Dongle software works ok, but I can't send directly from, say, a Windows File Folder, even though if I right click on a file and select 'send to ' 'Bluetooth Device', I get the Bluetooth File transfer Wizard, and its at this point that things fail, as it can't find any BTooth devices, even though my phone is paired already via the Dongle Software. Has anybody any idea of how i can get Windows to recognize Bluetooth Devices via a 3rd party Dongle? The one I'm using is a Mikomi V1.2 adaptor. Many thanks.

Not sure, but sounds like you don’t have BT devices set up correctly?

Try MS KB article 883259 scroll down to Transferring a file to a computer, Mobile or PDA

Albeit you don’t have to uninstall software & the device is a PDA rather than a Mobile, see this post here

Hello Bell Boy, Since writing the last article, I unloaded the proprietary 'Dongle'Driver and have just tried it using Windows XP Bluetooth (via Bluetooth Devices in Control Panel). Results are a bit mixed. 1) I can now send a file to either of my Mobiles from the 'Send to' facility on the 'right click' menu. This is the successful component, at least from File manager. Failures are: 2) I still can't send address book records directly from Microsoft Address book that comes with Outlook Express. I get the following message: "Bluetooth Device Not Found. Please verify that our Bluetooth Device is turned on". Does anybody know if this facility is supposed to work with Outlook Express? I haven't received any replies from my earlier posts on this subject which suggests that few have used it successfully. ) I don't seem to be able now to send files back from mobile to PC (which I could with the prop. software). When I look at Services under Windows Bluetooth, it mentions nothing about receiving files from BT devices, just sending them. Do you know if this is a windows restriction or not? 3) I don't seem to be able to pair a permanent connection, with my older BT devices I have to 'Discover' them each time. I can't start the 'Bluetooth Configuration' Icon in Control Panel, neither can I open 'My Bluetooth Places' application. So, I don't know whether these are the right places to be looking or not. Does anybody have any thoughts. I've read that it can be done, but now how to do it. Many thanks,

Hi philhoad

Only method I’ve seen for transferring OE wab contacts is by creating & using the vCard (business card) .vcf file extension format (see OE help file or MS KB 299629)

Unfortunately it’s now a bit hazy but a couple of years ago, recall some using the following method:

Creating a Contacts.vcf file starting in OE

Then opening it in Notepad to edit/add entries

Save Contacts.vcf file but renaming it with .doc extension as Contacts.vcf.doc file

Then using & sending that file

Never used/tried it but if interested you could experiment with above fuzzy technique

Regarding other issues, it may be device driver/software compatibility issues or device setup?

According to Wiki WiiBrew.org the Mikomi Bluetooth v1.2 Adapter BC03RUT1-01 is listed as a working BT device with Bluesoleil 1.6 Stack.

Albeit Bluesoleil software is available from vendor, as far as I know, Windows 2000/XP use the Bluesoleil bluetooth stack for Bluetooth enabled devices such as dongles.

Sounds like you’re already familiar with procedures but here are some links that may help?
