Windows XP improper startup.

I recently corrupted my Windows XP startup files when trying to load a modem driver.  Here's the symptoms:
-XP starts with no error messages, but takes 3minutes to do it
-not all programs startup - specifically, my antivirus program and I'm unable to open some windows files, such as system restore and uninstall.
-internet is unavailable - Internet Explorer opens, but no connection (this is with my previously operating DSL modem)
-I ran the diagnostic programs that came with the system and everything passed.
-I tried booting from the XP installation disc provided with the computer, but got a message that windows xp faied to start

I'm ready to try changing my registry, but wanted to see if anyone had any other options to recommend.

Thanks in advance for your help,
DSL

Did you try Last Known Good Configuration?
Begin tapping F8 after the Dell splash screen and on the options menu, select:
Last Known Good Configuration with the arrow keys. Hit Enter and let the system reboot.

I suspect you have virus and/or sypware.
You will need to go to another computer (since you can't get on the Internet.

go to http://vil.nai.com/vil/stinger/ and down load this free virus detector and cleaner. It gets the most likely bugs. Of course, you will have to copy it to a disk (it may fit on a floppy) and install it on your machine.

Then update your virus definitions and do a full system scan.

OOPS, replied to the wrong post.

I do suspect a virus.  I was running updated Macafee and thought I was relatively covered.

Thanks for the post.

Yep.  Tried last known good configuration.  Unfortunately, by the time I tried that, I'd already done a re-start after noticing the problem.

Thanks for the suggestion.

Just a thought...I worked on a machine recently, that had not had windows updates applied. No service pack 2. Internet connection did not work. I used Stinger (free download) with the machine disconnected from the Internet Stinger got rid of some major Trojans and other nasty stuff. I could then update windows and then connect to the internet.

If you suspect virus, get the standalone tools on a disk and pull the plug on the internet connection. Then clean what you can.

A great reference for cleaning a machine is http://rgharper.mvps.org/cleanit.htm

It is the best I have ever seen.

Problem fixed using macafee restore during startup (ctrl + F11).  Reset the system to new, but not much data loss.

Thanks for the help.
