Windows Xp Pro on Optiplex 740 Computers

Good Morning,

Reciently, the company I work for purchased a couple of Optiplex 740 computers. Originally, they came with Xp Home edition on them but as soon as I could, I upgraded them to XP Pro. Since the upgrade, both computers are having a problem with windows explorer. It seems to randomly lockup and if it's forced to shutdown, it doesnt automatically restart like it's supposed to.

These are practically pristine installs, the only programs they have are MS Office SBE and Trend Micro (our virus protection).

This problem is really getting to me, I've tried everything I can think of, updating windows, drivers, virus checks, but nothing works. Has anyone else had this issue or have an idea for me?

When you did the installation, did you install all of the required drivers?  THe full list, in the recommended installation order is:

  • Dell Desktop System Software
  • AMD Athlon™ 64 Processor Driver
  • NVIDIA nForce® PCI System Management Driver
  • NVIDIA® GeForce® 6150LE Graphics Driver
  • Broadcom® 5754 10/100 Ethernet Integrated Controller Driver
  • SigmaTel® STAC92XX C-Major HD Audio Driver
  • Trusted Platform Module Driver
  • 56K V.9x DFVc Modem This link opens a new browser window. (optional)
  • Drivers for any or PCI or PCI Express® cards installed

If you have the newer version of the 740 (the 740 Enhanced) the driver list is:

  • NVIDIA MediaShield Driver Floppy (RAID Only)
  • Dell Desktop System Software (XP Only)
  • AMD Processor Driver
  • NVIDIA nForce® PCI System Management Driver
  • NVIDIA® GeForce® 6150LE Graphics Driver
  • Broadcom® 5754 10/100 Ethernet Integrated Controller Driver
  • SigmaTel® STAC92XX C-Major HD Audio Driver
  • Wave/Trusted Platform Module Driver
  • NVIDIA MediaShield Application (RAID Only)
  • 56K V.9x DFVc Modem This link opens a new browser window. (optional)
  • Drivers for any or PCI or PCI Express® cards installed

Most often, problems are caused because users forget to install the Dell Desktop System Software (DSS).  The DSS is, basically, part of the chipset software, and is required for the OS to properly see and communicate with the hardware in the system.

Hi, Larry, we have 30 machines from the same PO that are all behaving the same way. How can I check if the DSS was installed at all, let alone what order it was in? I don't see it in the Add & Remove Programs dialog box. I did not do the installation myself.

Thank you!

If the OS was installed by Dell, then the DSS would have been loaded.  If they were shipped blank, or your IT department wiped them to removed unnecessary software, then it would depend on your IT department.  I've never looked to see if it shows up in the Add & Remove Programs list, but I don't think it shows up in XP.  It might show up in Vista due to changes in how that section of the OS works, but I'm not sure.

You could try with one system installing the DSS, then reloading the chipset and checking to see if that fixed the problem.  If it does, you probably need to install the DSS on the other systems as well.
