Scan with Adaware and Spybot Search&Destroy, both free.
If any USB devices (eg, printer, memory stick, card reader etc), other than mouse and keyboard are connected, try disconnecting them. If that speeds up the boot, go into BIOS setup and look for a " USB - No boot" option and enable it, save the change and exit setup.
Otherwise:
Start>run
Type in: msconfig
click ok
Click Startup tab
Uncheck everything on startup tab
except items related to firewall, antiviral software, mouse, monitor.
Exit msconfig and reboot
Put check in "don't show this again" box
That'll prevent lots of unnecessary stuff from loading at startup.
