Windows XP Pro SP2 - Automatic Update Problem

Hi!  I finally installed the SP2 about two weeks ago.  Everything seems to work fine, except for the Automatic Update.  I did select for the Windows Update to automatically download and to install at the time I specified.  But sometime I do check the updates manually by going to http://www.windowsupdate.com

The problem is that when I go to that site, the page says that it's checking for the latest update for my software.  But then it does nothing.  It seems that the program just stop working.  I was stuck like that for over an hour.  I thought that it might be a glitch, but so far it's been almost a week that I haven't been able to access that page.  I am using a dial-up, but based on previous experience it should not take over an hour just to find out whether or not there were any updates for the computer.

Does anyone know what the problem might be?  Any suggestion or - hopefully - resolution is much appreciated.  Thank you!

Hi diablo

The only thing i can think of is you have to have the v5 version of windows update, you may still be on v4 which will not work with sp2. Hope this helps. Good Luck:smileyhappy:

Thank you so much for your help.  But...  how do I know which version of windows update that I currently have?  Also, if the one that I have is v4, how do I get the v5?  Once again, thank you.

I combed MS thinking i dl'd and saved it, but could not find it anyware. I know i've seen it for dl but don't know where. I'll keep looking though. Go to control panel and open auto updates, the top paragraph say that's the first thing it will do before it dl's any updates, so you may have it. Also make sure you set a time of day when you are online to get auto update.

This may help. Go to Control Panel/Security Center and in Automatic Updates, Turn it off, Apply/Ok/Close everything and Reboot. Now Go to the update site.
