We can't answer that without knowing your model computer and installed hardware. Run the Windows Upgrade Advisor to find out if your computer and software can handle vista. It is on the vista disk and also available at the Vista web site.
As previously posted it depends what you want from your system etc. However I recently dual booted my laptop (which came with Vista installed) to Vista and XP pro. I've not used Vista since, it runs much faster on XP, and everything works on XP. I'd stick with XP to be honest.
I agree with post above, since I have Vista there are so many problems, on my laptop I have Vista and on Pc I have XP, few days I have to restore my OS to back up date because it crash, my cousin have vista as well and it crash, I do lots of graphic design and some software’s still work on Vista but they crash often so I have to work on PC, I’m not saying that Vista is rubbish even that I think it is and some people can disagree but if you using it for internet writing and playing latest game then you will know reason why people thing vista is good, but for business use, xp is better and on computer that don’t have good specification it improve performance. Vista still need couple of months and service packs before it become stable, it was same situation when Xp came out it was disaster, because we have to wait for vista longest from all windows that Microsoft made I though that this one will be much better then XP but it isn’t

You also need to take a look at any "mission critical" software that you use. Some software is having a hard time running under Vista.
