Windows XP problems
For some reason, I now cannot left double-click my desktop icons to connect to any program. Have to right click and open. Also when downloading a program a desktop icon cannot be established. I keep getting a code 0x80040154 code saying class not registered. I can download the program ok and it it will run. Also at the same time my Mcaffe Site Advisor quit working automatically when doing searches. I can go to a website and then click on the SA toolbar and it will work. It shows up grey in the toolbar instead of normally green. All of this started a couple of days ago when I was downloading a program and another program was also downloaded that I didn't request. I decided to uninstall both programs and then did a malware search that didn't show any problems. I was using malwarebytes and when I closed the program, the malware icon disappeared. Did other scanwith windows security essentials and it showed no malware. I have done a system restore with no change and a scannow with my cd installation disk and it found no problem. Any help would be appreciated.

The Microsoft link posted above refers to troubleshooting registering a server. Are you running a server?
It appears that you are using layered security protection. That's good. Without seeing diagnostic logs, I would be hesitant at this point to remove any of your security software leaving you unprotected to a certain extent.
I believe that we may have a rootkit problem here, but I cannot be sure unless some diagnostics and specialized tools are run. Time is critical in handling this if we are going to attempt fixing the problem.
My suggestion is to post the required DDS logs on the Malware Removal Forum at SpywareHammerand have the staff trained in malware removal walk you through the diagnostic logs and a cleanup. They do not use remote access but will advise you step-by-step on what you can do. Please do not attempt to run any additional scans, install software, or use any other tools until an analyst can advise you on the next step. Please use the same username there as you have here. Help is free, but you will need to register there and follow the posting instructions.
In addition, there are other options listed at the top of the this forum. Some are free; some require a fee. Please use only one resource. It can be counter-productive to have too many people trying to help. Good luck! :emotion-1:

Hi mrbowler ,
Welcome to Community Forum. I am sorry about the issue that you are facing.
• As you have mentioned that you installed some software’s, I would advise you to uninstall them and also uninstall all the other security software keeping the one that you use. In addition to this, we can also try to do a system restore to a different date and see if it works.
• Please boot the computer in safe mode and check if the issue occurs in safe mode or not. If the issue does not exist in safe mode, Try to click on start and then click on “Run” and then type “Msconfig” and then click on “Startup” and then click on “disable all” and the click on “services” and then “Hide all Microsoft services” and the click on “disable all” and then uncheck “Hide all Microsoft services” and then click on “Apply” and “Ok” and then restart the computer.
• If the issue is still not resolved please try performing the steps suggested in the following link and see if it helps.
