Hello Michele
Try runing diagnostics on your system and hard drive to find out if everything is working.
The Hard Drive may need a full format, not quick and make sure to format it NTFS.
Check here for the drivers and be sure to read how to install in correct order.
If you know someone who has the same version of XP for a dell you might use their copy to
install to you computer if your disk is bad.

I agree, sounds like bad hdd or memory.

Could also be a bum XP SP3 CD. There have been some of those lately...
Make sure it's clean and isn't scratched. Wipe only from center to edges, not with circular motions. :emotion-5:
