Windows XP Reinstall

Question

Hello: I've just got a new XPS laptop and I want to do a new Windows reinstall because I want to get rid of all the stuff that I do not need (aol, offers, etc)

I just want a clean OS basically

Assuming I need to install windows on the C partition, the system tells me that there is another OS in the partition and it is not recommended to install 2 OS

Should I delete the C partition, create a new one and do the install there?

I am assuming I should leave the fat partition alone as it has some recovery stuff in there.

Any help is appreciated

If the system is telling you there is an operating system present you are not booting from the XP CD. The instructions for installing XP are here. The smaller (~50MB) partition contains Dell diagnostics and the larger (3-5GB) contains the image of your hard disk as shipped for use by PC Restore. If you don't plan to use PC Restore (which will replace all the Dell-installed dreck you want to get rid of) you can safely delete that partition.

maybe you should just install on C drive, and leave the D drive partition unchanged because if PC restore is in D drive, re-partition will cause this function remove. IF your system have media direct, do leave 1.5 to 2 GB unpartition space in order to install it after reload OS.   Cheer! hope this help!!

I think if you have an XP DVD to install it go ahead and when the install gives you the warning that it is not recommended to install two OS on one partition, go ahead anyway. At one point you will be presented with an option to format this partition, choose Yes, format it with NTSF and install your OS. You will have a lot of trouble restoring the XP to the minimal condition you take for granted: there will be no Internet access and no sound. To avoid all these problem, save all .dll .inf and some other installation files on your system on a separate CD, they will be helpful. Also write down your computer name and when the install comes up with a suggested name, type the old name over it--it will help you later to communicate with Dell.
