Windows XP Restore - display resolution - driver installation nightmare

Hey,

Having major issues with my monitor post a windows restore.

The resolution was very low so tried to install the monitor driver off both the CD and a download from the dell site.

1. Click Start-> Control Panel-> and then double-click
Display icon.
2. In the Display Properties window, click the Settings tab, and then
click Advanced.
3. Click the Monitor tab, and then click Properties -> Driver tab ->
Update Driver.
4. When the Hardware Update Wizard dialog box appears, choose
“Install from a list or specific location" and then click NEXT.
5. Check the "Include this location in the search" box.
6. Type the path to the location where the driver
files were extracted (most likely "C:\Dell\Drivers\R76072") or use the browse button to select the location.
7. Click Next -> Finish to complete the installation.

My problem is that when I reach step three I can't press monitor properties, its inactive and in grayscale. The monitor selected is default monitor.

I tried to install a new video driver using the dell disk as a source which it appeared to do but since then my monitor has now switched off completely. To the point where I can't even get pass the xp welcome screen to log on and fix the problem...it just turns totally blank.

WHAT CAN I DO?

My PC Is Dell Dimension 2400 and my monitor is Dell E153FP

Have you tried last known good configuration or safe mode?

I've found a way of restoring the PC again so I'm halfway through reinstalling XP. IN theory it should return back to how it was before I tried to +fix+ it. My problem is that if I still can't update the driver how do I fix the screen resolution? Is there a DOS command I can use to reinstall the driver?

not sure if its touch panel

the resolution is set at low 640x480. 16 bit colour. i cant increase it.

display>advanced>monitor

the monitor type is default monitor which I can't alter, the properties button for this is inactive so I can't update the driver from there

i've downloaded the driver and I have a CD-rom for the monitor but everything is telling me to install it through the above path which for some reason windows won't let me

i've solved it. i used the XP restore disk again and pressed F12 at the beginning and booted from CD-Drive (I had previously rebooted it through McAffe Restore)

I tracked down a resources CD which has the VGA driver needed, the monitor driver was some sort of a red herring it would seem.

I think (may be wrong on this) that the max resolution on that monitor is 1024 * 768

Is that a touch panel monitor?

It may be the graphics driver that needs updating

check in your device manager  for display  adapters,

It should say Intel 82845 / Gl..... graphics driver.

I dont think a driver for the monitor can affect your resolution  (much) ;-)

Well as I said I found the correct driver by locating the Dell Resources CD-ROM. Once I installed all drivers from there it fixed itself.

I, too, am having the same problems but I am not able to try dowloading the driver from disc because I never got one with my Dell computer when I purchased it. Got an idea as to where I can get my hands on one? Also, did YOU finally get your problem resolved? If so, how?  Thanks. tiger 05
