Windows XP System Restore not working
After removal of the annoying Spyware Protect 2009 trojan, my Dell 4700 running Windows XP Media Center SP3 will not restore to a previous restore point or let me set a new one.
The message states: "System Restore is not able to create a restore point. Please restart the computer, and then run System Restore again."
That doesn't work either.
Please help!
Thanks,
George P.

looks like during the cleaning it wiped out the restore points. Very common, as the bad stuff can reside in the restore files.
if your having issues you can try doing a system repair, system repair reinstall or complete reinstall.
I would recommend the repair reinstall first.

Before you try a repair, do this-- open System Protection and turn off System Restore on all drives. OK it and reboot the computer. Then go back and restart System Restore. The System Restore files are corrupted now and turning it off, rebooting and reselecting it should clear out the corrupt files.

I have the same issue with my E1405, xp. I cannot restore to a previous point. In my case I did a re-installation and in the process the restore partition got wiped out.

you are talking about two entirely different things here. The system restore points are snapshots of the working system that the OS creates at certain intervals. The restore partition has nothing to do with system restore points. The restore partition is used to return the computer to the exact same condition it was in when you first got it. The real name of this partition is the Factory Restore partition.

Hi George_P,
I’m going to agree with Davet50 here. You’ll want to do a repair reinstall to get your computer back to working order. After you do that, just to be safe, make sure you’re backing up your stuff to external drives or making backups. Here’s a link for that: http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windows-7/beta-pc-backup.aspx.
Hope this helps.
Cheers,
