windows XP updates issues
After recovering my Dell Latitude D830 from a system crash (had to reinstall XP pro) I could not install window updates (87 of them). They would download but I would get a message that certain updates were not installed. I did this a couple of times using the automatic update program, then went to the Microsoft site and tried to download them there. Same thing. This time Microsoft said
"A problem on your computer is preventing updates from being downloaded or installed Solution: To fix the problem, try installing the updates again. If that doesn't work, use the
Troubleshooter to try solve the problem." So, I tried to get support from Microsoft, but was told to contact the manufacturer (Dell) for support. And, of course, Dell wants to charge for their help. So, I am asking anyone if there is an easy fix for this problem?

Try this first.
Re-register the Windows Update DLL with the commands below
Click Start, click Run, type cmd, and then click OK.
Type the following commands. Press ENTER after each command.
regsvr32 wuapi.dll
regsvr32 wuaueng.dll
regsvr32 wuaueng1.dll
regsvr32 wucltui.dll
regsvr32 wups.dll
regsvr32 wups2.dll
regsvr32 wuweb.dll

This solution works great for me initially. However, whenever I restart my computer and try to go to Windows Update I get the following error still:
Error number: 0x8DDD0018
The solution above will only fix it temporarily. I've been through every workaround I can find on the internet, but it seems the basic problem is the Windows update service keeps getting marked for deletion (why?? what is causing this??). If I go under services, it lists windows update as disabled. If I try to change it to 'automatic', I get an error saying the service is marked for deletion. I've even gone into regedit and deleted the deleteflag and am able to start the service. However, again whenever I restart, it gets marked for deletion again. What is causing Windows Update to be marked for deletion?
I updated to Service Pack 3 (Windows XP Pro) and hadn't noticed any issues from that. Are there any known issues with that? I also have the latest McAfee Security Center installed which came with this brand new Dell computer (XPS 630i), but it had been working fine with windows update. Any known issues with that? Do I need to reinstall everything??
I'm pretty much at a dead end and have no idea where to go from here. Is anyone else experiencing this or have any ideas about a possible solution?
Thanks in advance!
Dave
