Windows XP Won't Boot Up

McAfee was running and gave me a message of finding a virus on a windows file.  Can't remember which file, but said it was able to recover it and suggested running a full system scan.  I did that, but then I noticed I had some generic icons for some of my programs.  I did a computer restart and my system wouldn't boot up.  It gave me the options of continuing restart, last normal boot, or safe mode etc.  Wouldn't do the restart or last normal boot so I tried safe mode.  It wouldn't start there either.  Keep going back to the beginning and bringing me back to that screen.

Since I couldn't get safe mode, I couldn't do a system restore.  I have the Windows XP operating disk.  Can I insert it and do a recovery of something without deleting all my files and programs?  Wanted to check before I started trying to fix anything.

Thanks in advance for your help.
