WINDOWS/SYSTEM32/CONFIG/SYSTEM missing or corrupt
OK this error keeps comming up on my Dell 8400 and it goes something like this:
WINDOWS/SYSTEM32/CONFIG/SYSTEM missing or corrupt. "You can attempt to repair this file by starting windows setup using the original setup-CD-ROM. Select "r" at the first screen to start repair."
So I put in the OS disc and hit r, when it does go through I cant repair it because it asks for a repair disc or something and I dont have it. I found out that the only way to repair this error is to reinstall the OS all together. Then the computer runs fine for a few days, but a few days later the same error comes back again. So I have to reinstall the OS all over again and restart the cycle. This has happened 3 times so far and it's starting to get old.
What can i do?

I am having the same problem with one of my computers. I believe there is a problem with the hard drive. Specifically, I think the hard drive is slowly failing causing Windows corruption.
I'm not sure if you have the same setup I do, but during my boot up phase, I am able to press F12 to access the Dell Diagnostic program. This program enables me to run tests on the hardware on the system. If this program is not located on your hard drive, you should be able to access it from the "Drivers and Utilities" CD. Anyway, the hard drive tests fail on various sectors of the disk.
I tried calling Dell to report this issue twice. Both times they instructed me to re-install the operating system. This is really a short term fix as the Windows will eventually become corrupt again. My first re-install lasted about three months. At this point, I am trying to recover data using another machine and I am buying a new hard drive. The computer is still covered under warranty, however, I have yet to find a technical support person who has actually used the diagnostic utility and will acknowledge that this is actually a hardware issue.
Please post if you are able to run the hard drive diagnostics and experience the same results.

By the way, I guess I should mention that the error is due to a corrupt registry.
Here is how you are supposed to fix the problem.

However, because your problem is recurring, I think the issue is with the hard disk.
