Question

I get this error when I try to go to different web sites,one is computing.Net security,board.  I have XP-2 with all updates,spybot,adaware se .,msn antispyware, all updated and ran with nothing found also [avg 7.0} went to google searched error but i just dont understand what i found,most were about internet connection,I dont have problem with sending or getting mail just going to some sites all I get is page cant be found. Hope someone has idea cause I is lost at this point!! [I almost forgot tried system restore but no luck]:smileysad:

do the webpages open, only in some parts of the page, you see the 'error' messages? if you are using a hosts file to block ads, that could be the reason that you are seeing the 'error' messages..   i use a hosts file for blocking ads and malware.. i could open 'computing.net', but i did see some error messages where the ads had been blocked from loading by my hosts file..    you could try renaming your hosts file (c/windows/system32/drivers/etc/hosts) to 'NOHOSTS', and then test to see if the page will then load without the 'errors'..   http://www.computing.net/ Message Edited by redwolfe_98 on 08-03-2005 10:37 AM

when I go to site it like opens for a flash and then all you see is page cant be found and it shows windows/system32/shdoclc:dll dnserror htm ? the page that comes up also has a yahoo search bar on it ,I dont use yahoo for anything and never have.!! I have screenshot but I  dont know to send ,dont know much about all this stuff.

something else that you could try is opening a command prompt and typing 'ipconfig /flushdns'.. to open a command prompt, go to 'start'/'run' and type 'cmd'.. then type 'ipconfig /flushdns' in the command prompt and press 'enter'.. after doing that, it might not be necessary, but reboot the computer..    see if that helps, and then post back.. earlier I ran etrust virus scan and it said clean, I tried command prompt like you said but it still returns same error. I am having hard time explaing the page that comes up with error. I think if I could send screen shot, you would know what it is,will try to send

to rename the HOSTS file, just rightclick on the file and select 'rename' from the menu.. then rename it from 'HOSTS' (hosts) to NOHOSTS.. you can change it back to 'HOSTS' (hosts) later, or replace it with a copy of the standard default 'hosts' file if there is a problem with the one you have.. if you look at the delltalk forums home page, there is a special forum named "hijackthis" for help with "hijackthis" logs.. maybe your computer has been "hijacked" by something, where your browser is being redirected to other sites..

to use "hijackthis", create a folder somewhere on your harddrive and put the "hijackthis.exe" file in it, and run "hijackthis.exe" from there.. that way, you will have backups for things that you remove with "hijackthis".. my folder for hijackthis is in my "documents" folder..

did you try renaming your hosts file to see if that made any difference?

if you want to replace your current 'hosts' file with the standard default 'hosts' file, click the link below, then, in internet explorer, click 'edit', then 'select all' (to highlight the text), then click 'file' (in interenet explorer), then 'save as' to 'save' the file.. the file should have the name 'hosts.txt' after you have saved it.. then rename the file to 'hosts', and paste it in the folder at 'c/windows/system32/drivers/etc'..   alternatively, you could copy-n-paste the text to 'notepad', click 'save' (in notepad) to create the file.. name the file 'hosts', or 'hosts.txt' when you are saving it in notepad.. it will be in a text format.. then just rename the file from 'hosts.txt' to 'hosts' and paste it in 'c/windows/system32/drivers/etc'..   http://accs-net.com/hosts/Downloads/hostsplain.txt   if you downloaded the 'HOSTS' file from mvps2002, it likely is not the standard default 'hosts' file.. here are the comtents of the 'HOSTS' file from mvps2002.. note the difference between the two..   http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.txt   i use the 'HOSTS' file from mvps2002, but i have to edit it so that it doesn't block some things that i don't want blocked..    i think you can run windows without any 'hosts' file in the 'etc' folder, but you can easily create a plain one, using notepad, with the single line   '127.0.0.1       localhost'  (minus quotations) Message Edited by redwolfe_98 on 08-04-2005 08:22 AM

I didn't explain my last post very well. I renamed my host first like you said but ,after reboot I still had same error. I have spyware blaster and had back up host files from 3 mos. Ago,I restored that one and still same problem. Then went to mvps. Tried a new host ,same problem .Will try hijack as soon as i can get the time when I rush bad things happen [I mess it all up]  at least thanks to you I know how to rename host and change. I appreciate all of your help,will post back as soon as solution is found .

Att. redwolf_98 well I think its fixed , went to malware removal.com submited hjt but they said it looked ok but suggested several fixes but the one that  done it was winsock fix  .
