\window\system32\config\system missing or corrupt

HELP...
have a dell dimension....file is missing or corrupt .. \windows\system32\config\system
how can i fix this? pressing r does nothing and my original setup cd is damaged...this computer is about 4yrs old...is there a way to get it back up and going or all my pics gone forever?

is it also possible to use a recovery cd from another computer
or the windows xp cd from another compute

You should be able to use any CD. The only thing that you might need, would be the windows activation key. As long as you have this key, you could reinstall windows. The product key is locked to the computer not the CD.

Any Dell OEM Windows XP CD should work. The procedure to correct the error is here.

would the cd have to be a dell one or would a gateway or hp work?

Help - I have the same problem - no original XP home CD, and NO floppy drive.
Any ideas on how to boot the darn thing up. The pc is stuck in a loop with the \window\systems32\config\system missing or currupt.
Any ideas would be aprreciated.

easy way to do is put wondow on safe mode. then using system restore to whenever you want before problem happened. it works. don't need cd
