WinXPP SP2 slipstream problem
I've slipstreamed SP2 with the Dell WinXPP replacement CD, but can't get it to work. When I boot from the slipstreamed CD, it hangs with the error message the "usbechi.sys" is corrupt. I've compared that file with a good copy from another installation, and the files are identical. I've seen reports in other forums about the identical problem with slipstreaming a Dell system CD, so I'm pretty sure I haven't done anything wrong.
Does anyone have any ideas about how to resolve this?
I just want a slipstreamed version of SP2.
Thanks

Not sure if these are relevant (and you may have seen them already)

Assuming that you meant to type usbehci.sys, this is a discussion of that error message, possibly with a fix, not sure:

I've been using nLite to slip-stream several WinXP SP2 (Pro & Home) Discs (with WinXP & WinXP SP1 original Dell installation CD's) for others (relatives & friends) and I haven't come across that problem, yet.
I also use nLite to integrate "Post XP-SP2" updates (from RyanVM's site) with the same slipped-streamed CD (Update Pack nLite Integration Directions).
If you want to give it a shot... there's a "Complete Beginners Guide to nLite Unattended CD's" at the MSFN forum, also.
With XP-SP1... you'll need to delete 2 "SP1 Service Pack items" from the "i386 folder" just before integrating XP-SP2.
The 2 items to delete from the XP-SP1 CD (after you've copied it to the HDD), are the SVCPACK.INF and the SVCPACK folder. I've used the "XP Search Tool" to find the 2 items and deleted them from within the "Search Tool window".
Aloha,
Rod

Since I haven't run across this file corruption problem, yet, I'm not certain of a solution that will work for you.
There is one solution (that I know of), that worked for the "vga.sys corrupt" problem when slipstreaming "SP1", that I would try if I had encountered any file corruption while slipstreaming SP2. Dell user "Donald24" has posted this guide (1-18-2003) on his solution for the SP1 "vga.sys corrupt" problem... "click here".

I just did a little more searching... Have you guys come across "this thread"?
Dell user "pc_rose" encountered the "usbehci.sys is missing or corrupt" message when he tried to load the "Recovery Console" from his Slipstreamed XP SP2 disc...
Below is an excerpt from his post:
"On a thorough review of the cmdcons directory I discovered that the version of ntkrnlmp.exe was version 5.1.2600.31 and should have been version 5.1.2600.2180.
You can find the current version on any upgraded SP2 XP in directory Drivers. To resolve my problem it was a case of removing the old ntkrnlmp.exe file and replacing it with the new one. I ran up Recovery Console successfully. No corrupt usbehci.sys!"
And:
"I was about to start my slipstream again but before starting checked the folder on my first slipstreamed attempt for the state of the ntkrnlmp file and as expected it was the old version, however there are 2 other nt exe files which are also at the incorrect version ntkrnlpa and ntkrpamp 5.1.2600.31 instead of 5.1.2600.2180. Before I redo my slipstream disc I am going to check the files on the disk that have not been upgraded to see if they should have been and I will post a message on the forum as to my findings."
But since his post total is "still listed at two"... I guess he never posted back.

Thanks for that link - I hadn't come across that link despite some searching. FYI, my disk is Dell OEM XP Home Part No 6U790 which isn't specifically mentioned as giving a problem, but I've deided not to spend any more time on this issue which has turned the last of my hair grey. I've got a client with a Dimension 3000 with an XP Home SP2 CD and I'm going to take a copy of that and salt it away for the time I may have to do a reinstall on my 4550. Not sure which of Microsoft's or Dell's impenetrable licensing laws I might be breaching but I feel morally comfortable as I have a licensed copy of XP Home on the 4550.
Thanks again.

Well... I didn't. :o
Since I Slipped-streamed WinXP Home/Pro SP2 discs (using my spare test HDD) for relatives/friends to use... I also decided to try different configurations, just to see how well I could get WinXP to perform (mentioned in "this post"). I fooled around with it, off and on, for several months... so I kind of lost track...
I guess I got carried away... ;)
