Zip and compress are used interchangerably.  You need either WinZip or WinRAR.

http://www.winzip.com/aboutzip.htm gives basic information on how to use Winzip wizard

Or, if you use Winzip classic mode, after installing Winzip, in Windows Explorer or My computer, find the files you want to put into a zip, select them all (using shift or Ctrl key, as usual to select multiple files) then right click, you should see an option Winzip, if you hover over that further options come up, including 'add to Zip file...' or 'add to xxx.zip', where xxx is a name prechosen by Winzip (the name of the folder in which the files are located). Choose either option; if you choose the first, you will get a window in which you can give the zip file any name you wish, or accept the default name with the second option.

I use WinZip. It is easy to use once you get the hang of the interface.

One thing to note, documents with a lot of images (jpegs, gifs) will not shrink much, as those file types are already compressed.

If the documents are mainly text, they will compress a lot.
