The model of your computer is printed right on the front of it...
If you reinstalled the OS, you need to update it to get the USB ports working properly to run the wireless adapter.

So you reformatted your computer, but you don't know what an Operating System is? Windows is the operating system...
Did you run Windows Update over and over until no updates are left?
Did you install your drivers beginning with the chipset driver?

Click on Product Support tab above, then Downloads. Put in your system model info, then Windows XP for the Operating System. Find the CHIPSET driver and follow the instructions to download and install it. Reboot and see if the adapter works.
If it does not, then click on Start, Programs, Windows Update and run it again and again until there are no more Critical Updates left.
If that doesn't work, then call your Wireless Adapter manufacturer's 800#.
If you don't understand the above instructions, find someone who does.
