There are several MSKB articles describing problems similar to what you describe.  There are hotfixes available for these issues as well.  Check the following MSKB articles:

Thanks, but neither of these articles describes the problem.

 

The first article has to do with media that is longer than 30 minutes, I have my problem on all media, including clips that are only 20 seconds long.  (It keeps looping and I hear the audio even though WMP is closed.)

 

The second article refers to WMP not responding.

 

I searched the windows knowledge base but could not find anything.

You can download and reinstall WMP11.  That may resolve the issue.
