You may have had the language set to one for which you don't have the spellcheck and grammar files. For example, I don't have the German ones. If I open a document, edit menu, select all, then go to tools, language, select language and select German, then run spell checker, I get the three messages you saw.
So try open the document, Edit menu, select all, then Tools, Language, set language, select your language (English (US), or English (UK) if that is what you use), set it to default if you want to, click OK. then spellchecker should work.

Hi,
Try the first fix for all MS Word issues. Find and delete all copies of the MS Word template file
normal.dot
