Wordperfect Will not respond/open
I installed wordperfect office 10 in my new dell running XP. Quatro and all the other parts of the program work. However, when I try to open wordperfect, it hangs and won't start 90% of the time. Will start once or twice if I uninstall and then re-install. Windows task manager shows the message "program not responding" I downloaded and installed all the updates and it made no difference.
I was so frustrated that I then bought Wordperfect Office 11, the newest version. Guess what. Today I installed that and exactly the same problem.
I see that about a month ago someone posted this issue here and got no help. I have searched all the Corel news groups and suuport pages. There are no fixes suggested that are applicable to my system. Anyone have any suggestions.

This is funny but I just posted the same question a few minutes ago! See: WordPerfect Statup Problems under "Other Software". I am having the same exact problem and it is driving me crazy. What makes this more strange is I used the program one night this week to write some papers and it worked fine(?). Then the next day it is was back to the problem once again!

I wish it was funny.
One more point of information: If I try to get to wordperfect through one of my kids accounts set up on the same computer in XP, we get ther error message: "Runtime Error! Abnormal program termination."

Are you using any Norton (Symantec) products? I remember reading something previously about Corel (WordPerfect) products having issues (conflicts) with some Norton products (i.e. tools/firewalls). I use Norton Anti-Virus and I think I will try shutting it off and opening WordPerfect (problem is on my home computer) when I get home tonight.

I didn't buy an upgrade, I bought a new worperfect office 11 OEM. I am about ready to give up. It is hard to believe there is nothing on the corel site. I am running xp home.
I would really appreciate it if you let me know if you find a solution.
Meanwhile I am tempted to try to install an old version 8 I have.
Thanks.

I have only had this new Dell computer for a couple of weeks and I am still tweaking it. "The WordPerfect program came bundled with the computer." I believe it worked ok at first (though I didn't do much with it -- just opened it, registered and checked features, etc.). The changed I made to this system since then include Microsoft security patch upgrades (XP Pro) and I installed a couple of other software programs. I believe that the problem is probably related to a Windows setting somewhere. But this is like finding a needle in a haystack! I am going to keep working on it and will let you know if I find anything. I went to the Corel website but it states that EOM software is not covered under support -- great. But you stated that you purchased the upgrade, so you might try talking to someone at the company. I can't help but thinking that if we have this problem, so do others.

Here was the solution. The problem was a conflict between the printer driver and WP. I set a different driver as default to test this theory and there was no more problem. Then I deleted my normal driver and reinstalled my regular printer and now everything is (word) perfect.
I can't believe the idiots at corel have not posted naything about this on their site.

That makes perfect sense because I disconnected my network printer and was going to hook it up to the computer running WordPerfect (but have not yet). All this stuff starting happening about that time and I also remember seeing an error message when opening the program that stated: WordPerfect cannot find the printer.
Thanks, KME

After I got home last night I hooked up the printer and the problem went away. So far so good. It makes sense because WordPerfect uses the print driver to drive the viewing page and set page defaults. If you are networking to another system to print make sure the computer is seeing the print driver. I will keep you posted if anything changes.

I have the definitive simple answer to the problem. It is really hard to believe that Corel has not published it and that it apparently is not published anywhere on the internet. I got this by speaking with a smart guy on Corel's pay service line; here it is, for free:
In order for Wordperfect 10 and 11 to function properly, at least in XP, all of the installed printers must be available. Apparently, the program checks all the drivers when you open it. The problem in my case was that my home computers are networked together. When I installed the printer driver from a printer on a computer i a different room, I didn't follow the microsoft instruction which says that if it is not attached to a print server (i.e. so it is always available whether the other computer is on or off) then install it as a "local printer." Finally, I could see that wordperfect only worked when the computer in the other room was on so the printer driver from that installed printer was available. Once I deleted the printer driver and installed it as a local printer there were no more problems.
This is my good deed for the year and should save many people much misery.
