XP cannot see Win2K workgroup

My new (first) WinXP-Home computer (Inspiron 2650) is now able to connect to my home DHCP server to get its IP address, and is able to ping and be pinged by the Win2K computers on the network, and can reach the internet through my 802.11b network and cable modem. But, it does not see the other computers as members of the workgroup. So far, my debugging has been fruitless:
- The workgroup name is correct
- the computer name is unique
- Netbeui protocol is installed on all
- user name matches other computers

Anything else I should try before trashing WinXP and installing Win2K?

Thanks,
Thom

Try taking out NetBeui, and using TCP/IP on all systems. Then assign IP addresses of 192.168.0.1 (for first computer) and then 192.168.0.2 and so on and so on. And make sure the Subnet Mask is set to 255.255.255.0 on all machines. If you're using Internet Connection Sharing it's going to be different, the 2K machine will have to be set to Obtain IP address Automatically. If you are using Windows 9X or ME, I would suggest running XP's networking wizard. The wizard will not work on 2K, that's why you leave it to Obtain IP Address Automatically.

But I have successfully used DHCP to set all the network parameters for all the computers, including the WinXP. I have a linksys router that connects my LAN to the cable modem. The router is also the DHCP server. Since all the computers can get through the router to the internet I didn't think there was a problem with IP addresses. The only thing that seems to have a problem is the blanketyblank Windows Workgroup configuration. (This is more proof that Windows Network is an oxymoron. Should be Windows Netdoesnotwork.)

And can somebody PLEASE tell me what that Network Setup Wizard really does? Why would I need to run that on all my computers if they are already happily networking without it? Is this another dasteredly plot by Micro$oft to find out what software I'm using on my computers?

in advanced settings under tcp/ip, check to see that "enable netbios over tcp/ip" is checked in wins tab. also, i have found that sometimes you have to wait a while (hours) for the workgroup list to be populated.
