Can you explain in more details what happens? Do you understand what you want to ask?

Change to details view, then hold the s h i f t  key down and change back to thumbnail view.

If you choose thumbnail view from some other view, holding the s h i f t key down when you do so toggles between showing and hiding the file names.

I have spaced out the word s h i f t because otherwise it appears to be censored. No idea why

Brighton >> Now I got your point, when I looked at your picture.

The view you get is because the way you show things in XP. This is the default view. If you don't like (I don't), you can change it. Here are some things you can try:

1) Disable themes
2) Right click Start button -> Properties. You either customize start menu (the XP default behavior) or you can choose classic style (Windows 2000 like) and customize it
3) Right click any free area on the screen -> Properties -> Themes -> Windows classic.

If you prefer the behavior you have now, write down all the changes you make, in order to be able to undo them.

Brighton,
You asked Why does it do that?

To give you an additional option. Some people just wantt to see thumbnails, others like thumbnails and file name.
I generally prefer details view..
