XP install on Precision 380

I am having some issues trying to do a clean reinstall of XP on a Precision 380.

Booting from the XP install CD hangs immediately after "Setup is inspecting your hardware configuration..." message.

I am aware that the installed 80Gb drive is SATA and I will need the SATA drivers to install, but I cannot even get setup to get that far.

It appears that the SATA drive is being interrogated as the drive indicator on the system unit is lit, but it doesn't seem to go any further. I have left the setup run for more than 20 minutes, but it doesn't continue.

I have tried setting all the different SATA options in the BIOS, without any success, except for disabling the drive completely which allows XP setup to work perfectly without any SATA drive to talk to.

I have had the dubious honor of installing XP onto more than 100 different systems, so I have a fair idea of how to do this, but this hardware configuration has me stumped.

Any suggestions would be welcome.
