XP Professional Shutdown Problem
Recently, I have not been able to shut down XP; everything goes well until the very last step before shutdown, when the screen says "Windows is shutting down..."
It hangs on this message, and does not do so, even though I left it to complete overnight.
I have not upgraded/installed any drivers lately, so I have no idea why this is happening. I do not think it is because of program activity, because the computer was idle when I did so.
Thanks for all your help!

a variety of things can cause shutdown problems. Have you tried a system restore to a point you know when it shut down properly?

could be just about anything causing it not to shut down. If i were you i'd scan the system for viruses and spyware, make sure it's clean. then i'd disable all the startup programs and reboot. You'll have to hard boot when it hangs on shutdown, then reboot and wait for a few minutes and try shutting down again, if it shuts down properly go through the startup list, enable a few at a time until you find out what program running in the background was causing it to fail.
to access the startup list go to start > run > type MSCONFIG - select Select Startup and open the Start Up tab.
you can google each startup item name or look on http://www.processlibrary.com for definitions of them.

Thanks for the responses!
I have thought about both options, but I've been trying to fix my Wireless issue first so that I can better connect to the Internet (the repair function hangs on "Disabling wireless adapter..." and will not finish).
I've just done a restore. I also plan to run through my processes list.

I recently bought a Vostro 1220 and I have had the same problem from the start. The machine was never connected to the internet, therefore there can't be a virus. It just does not shutdown. I have to switch the computer off by pressing the on/off button. I do not want to pay for calling DEll on an 870 number. Did nobody test the computer before they delivered it? Have the suppliers screwed up?
I am not a happy customer.
