XP-Professional SP2 Freeze

I've tried to install SP2 about 5 times now.  Each time it successfully installs and then asks me to reboot to complete the installation.  When I do so it goes through the normal rebooting process until it asks me for my password to start windows.  When I type in the password the screen turns to a bluish green screen and my mouse freezes.  Nothing happens after that.  I've run adaware, I've scanned for viruses, I've followed microsofts advice on their support page on what to do if you come across this problem and nothing seems to be working.  I can get the computer to start in safe mode and everything works just fine in it.  Any advice?  I really don't want to have to install this AGAIN.

Thanks.

If it's a USB mouse that could be the problem ??

I'll try to use my regular mouse to see if that helps, but somehow I"m doubting it.  I went to Dell tech and they were of no help...at all.  They told me to do exactly what i"ve been doing and it did nothing.  When I told them I'd tried that many times they told me to try it again.  Really helpful...  My warranty expires in a week and I have no clue what to do.  They told me to try uninstalling this time instead of doing a system restore, but my computer froze up after uninstalling as well.  This is getting reallllly frustrating.

Apparently any USB device including a mouse and/or a keyboard can interfere with a good install of SP2. So uninstall the usb mouse driver, reboot, and install an XP standard driver for the 'old' mouse. Won't hurt to run the System File Checker before the install or uninstall of SP2. Do this from Start|Run:

sfc /scannow (note space)

Don't be too hard on the techs. They're working under time constaints using a set script. You keep posting til you get this done.
