"a few minutes after waking from standby mode (the first time I used standby), it spontaneously restarted."
bsod when resuming from standby in Windows is common among many other resume bugs in Windows, not always the driver to blame, some hardware configurations have more issues with is than others. I don't know how many bsod events you have had or if all of them are the same driver causing this, I can only go by what you post.
Disable standby and see if things improve, record each bsod if you can.
"
dne200.sys " is the clue as to what driver is causing the bsod, if you have a Cisco VPN client software installed, and are not using it or do not know what it is, go to add/remove programs and uninstall the software, restart and the problems should be gone.
If you need this software, you need to update the Cisco software or stop the PC from going into standby.
"Event ID of 8003" is normal on a network, not part of your bsod problem.
Thanks, mombodog. Yes, I do have the Cisco VPN client installed and need it for my work. I don't believe it was installed before last night "after" the first instance of the restart. The subsequent restarts were not as a result of going into standby. I tried to update the driver for the Cisco VPN, but teh Device Manager told me there was not a better match. Any other thoughts? Thanks, Mark
Since the restart last night that gave me the error message I indicated earlier, I had the machine running and doing things for quite a few hours. I left it on all night with no issues.
When I logged in to the VPN client this morning, I only got 40 minutes of work before another random restart.
My gut tells me it's the VPN stuff.
I called my HELP desk and they are now looking at the machine to see what's up. The tech asked if it was a Vista machine, and I explained that it was, but I had installed XP Pro. I heard a chuckle and was asked if I knew what I was doing. Although I'm 99 percent sure it's not my XP install, it really doesn't matter.
Just need it fixed. Hopefully I'll have another update this afternoon.
Well, it seems as if it was bad VPN software. My IT guy uninstalled and reinstalled it to no avail so he found another version and installed that. Seems to be running well now. Worked for 2+ hours this evening with no shut downs.
