XP re-install is different version of XP???

My Dell 4700 was delivered with XP MCE 2005. After a complete re-install with new hard disc, and all upgrade pac's installed, my version of XP now says XP MCE 2002. On the desktop it displays XP professional (I do not know if specific functions of XP pro such as remote desktop are enabled or not). The #1 item I now can not have is windows media player 11, which will allow me to network/share with my PS3.

What gives with the re-install version of XP from Dell?  The DVD says MCE 2005, yet it installs this odd hybrid (I've tried it twice).

OK, I figured it out! Do a complete re-install, complete with removing partitian, and in CMOS be sure to restore to factor default, reformat HD, install from original XP MCE oem, then, install Microsoft .NET v1.1 plus update, THEN install the roll up, THEN install windows media player 11.  After that, just set windows for auto updates.  DONE!

same issue for me on an E510.    Of course, I may just be incapable of checking the version.

Have you installed Rollup2?

To my best knowledge Rollup2 is what makes it MCE 2005.

My system also says it is 2002.

Adfinney,

The way I understand it is this.  What you see in My Computer|Properties is the actual version of the underlying XP operating system; i.e., XP 2002 Media Center Edition Service Pack 2.  However, the real version number for MCE is shown if you open Media Center, click on Settings|General|About Media Center|Software Version.  That should show it's the 2005 version, if Rollup 2 was installed.

Hope this info helps.

Can you believe this?  We both posted almost the same exact comments at the same exact time.  We must be receiving each other's thoughts via the Internet.

MCE is based on XP Professional, 2002. To verify the version of your operating system, click on the MCE desktop icon>Settings>General>About Media Center>Software Version.
