XP Service Pack 2 on CD won't complete installation

Trying to install XP Service Pack 2 on my DELL Dimension 8300. Installation is from a CD and I have tried four times, using two different CD's that were sent from Microsoft.

Installed on my H-P notebook without any problems. Installation will go to approximately 25 to 35 %; looks like everything is okay but progess bars just stops. Looks like installation 'hangs'... cannot 'cancel' install. I have to bring up tasks and stop the installation. Pop-up message after that tells me that 'program not responding'. No error messages during installation attempt.

I have turned off my antivirus; any other suggestions I could try?

Thank you
Richard

100mph;

Thanks for the information link; I read the instructions and nothing stood out that I'm doing wrong, but will follow the steps and try again tonight.

Thanks for replying...

You may want to try this fix that Microsoft put out a few days ago.

I have since installed on my Dimension 8200 and 2350; no problems, but still cannot install on my 8300. I have turned off all antivirus, updated the BIOS and tried install three more times, both from CD and download. Always 'stalls' about one third of the way through the installation.

No error codes pop up but I did discover an error code by going to the Windows Update; shows that the installation has failed three times, error code 87FF004. Of course, doing a search for this error code through Microsoft turns up nothing.

Any other ideas I could try would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you
Richard

Thanks.  I am trying several things. I get the files backing up then it starts the registry. Then hangs  forever. I have to  restart to get out. I have tried downloads and sp2 disk from MS.  I have a few ideas I will wait for our test. Not a real issue but screws up autoupdate as sp2  is always wanting to load

Richard.  Is this hang during the registry backup.

papabear;

As many times as I have tried to install, I should know that part by heart. It seems to me that it is after the registry backup and happens while it is extracting files. Will have to try the install once again to verify...

Thanks for the reply-

Richard

papabear;

Okay; tried to re-install from the CD. Here is the short version of what takes place...

Extracting Files>To Directory

Welcome to Windows XP Service Pack 2
License Agreement

Uninstall Folder
Updating your system
Inspecting your current configuration
Creating third party driver list

Running Processes before Install
Backing Up Files
Among other messages, I saw 'Backing Up Registry' and 'Creating Restore Point'

Installing
Finishing Installation
Running Processes After Install

Blue Progress Bar at this point is under the "e" in the word updates; never moves or progresses any further.

Tab shows -Back, -Finish, and -Cancel; all options are grayed out and cannot be selected.

Only way out at this screen is to use Task Manager, which shows that SP2 Installation is running, even through it has stopped.

After I 'End Task', message will then say 'Program is not responding'.

I then go to Systems/Restore to go back to prior of the start of the installation. The one time I didn't and rebooted things got messy and I had to go back to a previous Restore Point to clean things up.

Todate, I have tried to install from two CD's and the download version at least 10 times; all end up as posted above.

Do you have sufficient space on the hard drive?

JRosenfeld;

Thanks for the reply; I have a 74.46GB hard drive, with 19.8GB used and 54.56GB free space.

That's certainly ample (about 1GB should be enough), so that is not the cause; but I thought I'd mention it just in case..
