XP slow shutdown and reboot

My inspirion 5150 seesm to be getting slower shutting down and booting up.  I have carried out general maintainence such as removing old files, disk cleaning etc, and have microsoft antispyware and norton internet security installed and up to date.
One of these free PC tune up tools has identified some 244 faults in the registry, is this genuine or just a ploy to sell their products to remove the "serious" faults. if so which is a good optimizer to use. All applicatons work normally.

Get yourself a copy of BootVis (It's free) -- It lays the boot files out on the hard disk to speed boot-up. It will also show you where in the boot process the system is slow.

Slow shutdown can be related to closing network connections -- make sure that you have closed all your programs before you shut down. Norton can also slow the shutdown process as well.
