Blue screen errors doesn't mean the death like it is known as.  Actually it contains alot of valuable information.  If you write down the error number and go to www.support.microsoft.com/kb and type the error number in the search you would find the solution.  I do tech support for sp2 so I know what I say is proven and true.  Feel free to email me if you like with questions and I will get you the answers.  That is what I do for a living.

I believe that I have some type of hardware conflict.  What are the steps needed to resolve the issue?  In the morning when I first startup my computer, it takes three or four tries before it starts completely.  Once I have started my machine completely, it generally will restart completely with no problems.  So the problem is random but typically always happens on a cold startup.

Let me know if you can help.

THANKS

The first thing I would do is verify sp2 is on computer by right clicking my computer and selecting properties. On the general page will tell you if sp2 is on computer. I would go to add/remove programs and remove sp2 and agree to all warnings. Then go check for hardware updates for your computer. For example is you have a dell go to dell's website and search for driver updates. A list will come up for your computer. Unless you know the name of everything including video card name I would go through every update they have. If the update doesn't succeed no worry go on to the next. The reason would be the program is not on computer or the driver is up to date. From there if you have norton or macafee on the computer, remove them if you have the cd. Make sure all other firewalls and antivirus is closed then go to www.support.microsoft.com/windowsxpsp2 to get the service. Prior to downloading the sp2 do a full system virus and spyware scan to ensure the computer is clean. If all this doesn't work, feel free to let me know. I will continue to check out other things for you also.

Is there way to track and see the errors logged by my Dell system?

March 2nd, 2005 15:00

No actually I got it off the top of my head cause I do it regularly at work. As far as this page you sent me is the one I actually use to download the it professional version.  I click on the resources for it professionals, then the next page I scroll down to get the service pack and clck on download and deploy sp2 on multiple computers link, then on the next page I click on download on the right.  It doesn't matter if you put it on one computer or on  500 computers, it just keeps you away from the auto update site which you would go to if clicking on a single computer. At work we see a lot of window update issues installing sp2 automatically. 99% of people we get to download sp2 from the multiple computers never have any issues after installing it.

Did you follow the suggestions here?   It should not be too late to do most of them before doing anything drastic, like uninstalling, which seldom improves the system.

I have already contacted Dell and verified that I have the most recent drivers for my hardware.  I also run Ad-Aware and SpyBot regularly.  I am suspicious of an HP D series printer that I attach to on a network.  I also have an HP Officejet 6110 attached locally.

I am not sure how to use the Event Viewer information.  I found the Dump file but don't know how to open it.

I am seeing this error on multiple days:

Product:Windows Operating System ID:2004 Source:PerfNet Version:5.2 Symbolic Name:PERFNET_UNABLE_OPEN_SERVER Message:Unable to open the Server service. Server performance data will not be returned. The error code returned is in the first DWORD in the Data section.  Explanation

A performance monitoring program tried to open the performance counters for the Server service. The Server service could not respond to the request. The Server service is not running or is transitioning between starting and stopping or vice versa.

  User Action

To determine whether the Server service is running, at the command prompt, type Net Statistics
A list of running services is displayed. If the Server service is not listed, at the command prompt, type Net Start Server

Do you know what I should do?

Just double click on Aplications . . Security . . or System and look for the red X's . . double click on one and it will give you some information on what the error was and a link for more info.

I have installed and run the Microsoft Antispyware beta version.  I found no spyware.  I'm not sure if the perfnet.dll file error is causing my problems.  Can anyone help?

Thanks!

Microsoft antispyware beta is just that beta which means it is in a testing stage, It only searches for 7 different viruses and doesn't search your whole computer for spyware. I would recommend installing another spyware program like adaware se personal free edition. You can get this at www.lavasoft.com  As for the dll file it could be your whole issue. Try typing the exact dll file in the search bar of google and look thru the different sites.  You will find a link to download the file for free. I wrote the dll file down and will research it at work. If i find the link to download it free I will post it for you. I will add you to my favorites and send it to you. I will be in touch in the next day or so.
