XP SP2 question
I have the XP SP2 CD and I am attemping to install it on my test system which is an Inspiron 8100 running XP Home. I have done all the prep work (AV scan, turned AV off, Ad-aware scan, defrag, backup). I get the screen that says: "Please wait while setup inspects your current configuration, archives your current files and updates your files."
But that's the last thing that happens. The HD access light goes on and off but watching the Task Monitor nothing appears to be happening. One time I let it run like that for 6 hours and saw no change whatsoever.
I just checked the Dell download site for the latest BIOS version and I believe that the one listed is what I am using (I'll check tonoght as I am at work now).
Anything else that might be causing this problem?

Have you detached all peripherals? Replaced cordless mouse with PS-2 version (if applicable)? Removed system from port replicator (if applicable)? Performed a thorough disk cleanup prior to starting? Disabled all unnecessary background programs, including Automatic Updates? If you're on a network with file/printer sharing enabled, that may have an impact as well.
Sometimes it helps to reset the default configuration via System Setup, particularly if you've made any changes along the way. If all else fails (and since you specified that this is a test system), SP-2 usually goes on a bit quicker and easier over a clean installation of Windows XP.

Yes, I have detached all peripherals and I am using a PS2 mouse. No port replicator.
I probably did have some background programs running, most likely Automatic Updates was one of them.
I was still connected to my LAN also. Should I disconnect from the networK?

It sometimes helps, once again, particularly if you have file and printer sharing enabled. Almost sounds more like some other hardware issue, though, so resetting to the defaults in System Setup might help, too.

OK, I've spent the last couple of days making sure my I8100 is free of viruses and malware, cleaning up unneeded registry entries and deleting all the bloat I can find. No peripherals connected, disconnected from the network and turned off the AV. Two hours ago I started the SP2 install again and from watching the Task Manager it is not doing a thing. (XSP2.EXE shows zero CPU activity.)
So all my efforts appear to be for naught. I am certainly open to suggestions at this point! Or in otherwords what the heck do I do now? :smileysad:
