XP SP2 update not an option on Update

Greetings:

I am trying to update the o/s on a Dell 2400 with XP Pro that has not been used for quite some time. The General tab on My Computer says it is at SP1, yet when I installed the latest Windows Update patches in order to get SP2, the History menu shows SP2 already there.

The WIndows Update check revealed 64 "High Priority" security updates but none of them are SP2.

This PC came with no CDs when new.

Any hints on how to verify if the system thinks it has SP2 installed, or if these high priority updates must be done before SP2 can be listed as an option and installed? The updates shown are dated later than when SP2 was released. Can I get SP2 some other way and install separately.

Otherwise, the system currently has no issues.

Thanks,
WF

Look in Add/Remove Programs . . put a check in the "Show Updates" box at the top and see if SP2 is there .

The general TAB should show you the SP version you have, also you can click on START - RUN and type winver, press enter and it will give you the info, you can manually download the SP2 HERE and also save it into a Cd and use it in the future, no problem, I did that a lot of time when using XP

simpswr, gioaguilar:

Thanks for your help.

All initial indications from the PC after using your recommendations below were that it thought it did not have SP2 installed. I then downloaded it from the MS site in your reply and installed it with only minor issues remaining. At least the PC now knows that it has SP2 from all check points.

When connecting this PC to the home network, it can readily access the internet through the wireless AP/Gateway and any shared folders on other PCs, but it does not let other PCs access / share any of its folders or the printer - which is where I keep it. I've set all the permissions properly. Is this a question for a different forum?

Thanks,
WF

What firewall is on the pc that will not play nice? . . Look in Services to see that the Workstation service is set to auto and has started
