XP SP2 worries

I installed SP 2 on my Dimension 2350 about 4 months ago.  It was a disaster.  Fouled up the computer something awful.  After several days of trying to fix it, I uninstalled SP2, and all was well again.
I have since learned that some preparation of the computer is required, which I did not do originally.
But I'm scared to death of messing up my smooth-running computer again with SP2.  Any advice on (a)whether to even install SP2, or (b) what precautions to take first????
Many thanx!!

I have WinXP SP1 on a non Dell machine and have never had a BSOD once in all that time (a year and a half). No crashes or anything of that nature. I still get all the critical updates regularly. I have the SP2 CD but didn't install it and I don't think I ever will as of this point in time. That's just my 2 ¢ worth.

SP2 fixed a lot of security concerns.  Just my 2 cents, we run a lot of old financial applications on machines that have no business running XP, let alone SP2, but all seems to run well and our compnay has mandated that that all machines within the domains be at an XPSP2 level by next October.  All 2000 based machines will be banned from the network.

Miscrosoft strongly suggest downloading and running at least two spyware programs first before the SP-2 install.   Also read a computer mag that suggest the following :

1.  Reformat and reinstall windows xp

2.  Install SP-2

3.  Install the chipset driver if not already on the operational cd that came with the system

4.  Install the video card driver and reset the monitor resolution

5.  Install everything else, including the Critical updates from M/S web site

I did this and not one problem to my system.   Other's will not go this far, but what the heck !
