XP Stuck in Installation Loop
I had a few quirky problems with a Dimension 2350 pop up over a short time span, so I tried using Restore. I went back over month trying diff restore points only to get a msg that my system was unable to restore on any of the restore points I tried. So, I had the brilliant idea of repairing XP Pro.
On my first try I got a msg that XP could not find the ialmnt5.sys file. My keyboard was inop (usb brd) so I aborted the install and tried again. Same results.
I hooked up a ps2 keybaord to try again. Now what happens is that all I get is the lt blue "setup is restarting ......." screeen, which runs for a second, then the machine reboots and the process starts all over again.
I have tried rebooting from the CD and trying to finish the install from there, but I eventually get the same loop. I have checked for disk errors, tried rebuilding boot.ini. I put the hdd in my old XPS and deleted $WIN_NT$.~BT and $LDR$, put it back into the 2350, and tried again, but nothing seems to work. I am trying to avoid a clean install (which I'm not sure would work anyway, at this rate, lol).

How exactly are you trying the XP repair install? Are you getting to the point where it finds the current XP install and offers the R repair option?
If so there may be corrupt windows files on the hard drive or there could be bad sectors on the hard drive.
So you could boot with the XP cd and at the first screen select Repair Console. From the prompt run chkdsk /r to repair bad data sectors then try the repair install.
If that fails backup your data and try fresh XP install.
