XP will not recognize internet connection

Question

I run multiple computers using a router at home. All connect to the internet just fine except one. I get the 'page cannot be displayed error' when trying to connect to the internet on my Dimension 8200. From the command window, I type in 'ipconfig' and instead of displaying addresses, I get a message that says: 'An internal error occurred: The request cannot be supported. Please contact Microsoft Support Services for further help. Additional information: Unable to query host name.'  Other messages that appear on the screen are 'Symantec Email Proxy' window and a warning from the Security Center that the Firewall is Off and computer is at risk. I don't know if its related but all of this happened approx 2-3 weeks after downloading SP2. Antivirus was up to date with regular weekly scans as well as spyware scans completed. All other computer applications seem to function normally.  I am not experienced with troubleshooting and hope someone will have some suggestions to fix the problem. Thanks in advance for your time.

Try running winsockfix for Windows XP from the Here and if that doesn't work try lspfix from Here. Steve

You may be able to do a System Restore to prior to your installation of SP2. If so, try it to see if it is SP2 that is causing the problem.

Thanks for all your suggestions, Steve. I tried them all but was unsuccessful. I ended up reinstalling XP to restore my internet connection.
