Hello rk cr :smileyhappy:

If you are getting a "svchost.exe " error every time you boot up the first thing you must do is check for virus/worm etc.  "svchost.exe " is a name some of them use to fool you.

See if you can do the following
Msconfig check
Start/Run and type in
msconfig
OK
Startup Tab

Keep the page open then go to link below. You may have to go to the site with your other machine.
http://www.sysinfo.org/startuplist.php

Read the Key at top of page. Type svchost.exe into the  Search box.  You will get a list of all svchost.exe start up entries and if they are legitimate or malware.  If you find malware disable that entry in msconfig.  Do NOT reboot.  If the site gave you a file name search your machine and delete it.

Online scans would be the best way to clean up but you mught not be able to run them.  Just in case you can
Trojan Scan  http://www.windowsecurity.com/trojanscan/

Housecall      http://housecall.trendmicro.com/

If you need more help just post back.

thanks for the help but I fixed the problem. It had something to do with windows updates. I searched around a bit and thought I'd try 1) turn off updates, 2) restart, 3) manually update, 4) reboot and turn on updates again. taht solved the problem. But thanks for telling that svchost.exe could potentially be bad.

I'm getting perhaps a similar problem that I suspect has somethng to do with utomatic updates but I'm relucant to go into hidden files and delete as one of the fixes suggests. What specifically did you do?

Thanks

Upon booting I receive the following eror message

GenericHost Process for WIN 33 Server has encountered a problem.

Instruction 0x745f2780 referenced memeory at 0x00000000 could not be read.

Specific details:

SZAPPNAME: SVCHOST.exe   SZAPPLER5.1 2600.2180

SZMODNAME: MSI DII  SZMODVER 3.1.4000.2435

OFFSET 00012780

I have up to date MCAfee and have run scans so don't think it is virus. The computer seems to function normally but will crash occasionally??

Yes it is similar.
You don`t have to delete anything.

Try the following and see if it fixes the problem
Right click "My Computer"/Properties/Automatic Updates.
Put a check in the box "Turn off Automatic Updates" then reboot.

Go and get the Updates manually, reboot again

Then go back and turn "Automatic Updates " back on again
If you need help doing any of that just post back and I`ll show you how to do it.

Try it and see if it helps
