XPS Image Writer...can't print now...need help!!!
I have a two-month old Dell Inspiron 530 with Vista 32-bit OS...and have had no problems until now...
Somehow my default printer is now "xps image writer"...I did not change this...don't know what it is. Every document or picture I try to print must be "saved" as an '.xps' file...which then cannot be printed. Is Microsoft trying to overtake Adobe's .pdf files? I really don't care about all of that, but I just NEED to be able to print. I have an HP Series 2510 printer which is now disabled...I cannot even get ot selecting my printer...hitting the 'print' button just results in a 'pop-up' asking me to save as an 'xps' document. Any solution anyone can offer would be greatly appreciated...

Does your HP printer show up in the printer box? Go to Control Panel (classic view) -> Printers. It should show the HP printer and the Microsoft XPS Document printer.
If the HP printer shows up, try right clicking on it to set it as the default printer. You may need to be logged in as an administrator to change the default settings.

I can change it to 'default', however it shows as 'offline'...which may be the problem. What would change it to 'offline' and how do I get it back 'online' to see if it will print? Thanks....

qballgreg,
Right click on the printer and click on use this printer online. This should put the printer back online. You may need to delete any print jobs in the Microsoft XPS Document Writer.

Rick-
Thanks...however that selection is not available when I right-click...I tried to 'add a printer' thinking the computer could find it...the return was that 'no printers found'...likely because it is 'offline'...back where I started...so any more ideas would be appreciated...the other head-scratcher is that I have done nothing to change my printer situation, which has been fine....???

One suggestion is to delete the HP printer then reboot. Once the computer is up and running, try plugging in the printer to see if it will install the print drivers properly.
Edit: Another thing to check--is the printer powered and is the USB cable fully seated in the printer and on the back of your box? You might want to reseat the cable on both ends to double check.
