XP's Useless User Accounts!!!

I have a problem with my internet.  I can only be connected with one user at a time.  Here is what happens...

I connect with User X to Computer A and connect to the internet

I switch user without completely logging off and log on to User Z on computer A

I am not on the internet on User Z...I connect to the net with this user

I switch users again and go back to User X

My internet connection is lost

Problem:  I can only have one user connected at a time and i would like to have it like if i log on to any user and connect...all users are connected...I want to be connected to the internet on all users...Please Help...Thanks..

Are you on cable modem or dial-up? If you are on dial-up I would say it is in your modem settings or IE connection settings. I have cable and I use multiple user accounts (4 to be exact) and my family and I use this same procedure (Windows Key + L) to switch users and we all maintain our connections.

ICS is a buggy setup used to connect two pc's to the internet through one pc's internet connection. Not to be used on a single pc to allow all users to be online at one time. Switching users breaks the internet connection everytime when using a dial up connection. Just one of XP's quirks. I 'd have to agree with a previous poster that it is some sort of internal security code that causes the disruption.  7

I believe the behavior you are seeing is normal. User Z can not use the connections established by user X for security reasons. Don't think there is any way around it other than installing a different modem and phone line for each user.

not sure, but this may help maintain the connection.

I don't know what is going on here. I had a message body on this thread and now it is blank?

What the heck......No way I'm going to retype it.

Personally, I wouldn't run any VB script especially from someone I didn't know. The link I posted showed how to make the change in the registry but according to the poster it didn't correct the problem.

my experience was the opposite, i could not connect after switching users, but if i connect with user 1, then switch to user 2 they share the same internet connection.

Can you explain what you are saying as your sentence appears to say the same thing and now I'm confused.

I am having the same problem. Here's the situation:

I have two user accounts, Administrator and Guest.

The Administrator account can connect to the internet just fine...and if I switch to the Guest account, I remain connected. Guest account cannot disconnect the modem (not a problem though).

My problem is that the Guest account CANNOT access any of my modem connections even though I have chosen to allow all users to share those connections. The Guest account can't connect to the internet at all.

How can I fix it so that the Guest account can use the modem connections?

Aha...after hours of searching and troubleshooting, I found the solution.

It seems the default Guest account can NEVER access a modem internet connection. It can work with always-on broadband connections.

This link explains things a bit more: http://www.andyrathbone.com/tips/guestdial.html

So to resolve the problem, I just disabled the standard XP Guest account and created a new Guest account of my own. The new account works like you'd expect the other one to and has access to my modem connections.

Lame that there's no documentation or help in Windows to explain this 'feature'.

There is a subtle but important difference between a broadband and a dial up connection.  With broadband the is no authacation required for the connection, with dial up there is.  The reason for the difference is that with dial up any phone line can be used so you ISP needs to know you are you.  With broadband a location is activated and they will accept connections for anyone at that location.  You generally need.  The name and password I got from my ISP for my DSL connection is not for connection, but for e-mail.
