your current setting prohibit running ActiveX controls on this page! PLEASE HELP!!!
Ok, this had just recently happened. When trying to go to certain sites I get this pop up error. I was trying to remember if I had done anything that would change any settings but I didnt.(maybe updated the kodak easyshare thing, and I got rid of a free screen saver cuz it wasnt working right) I cant even get my msn messenger to work because of this activex thing, it wont even let me log on,and cant check my hotmail. I also cannot use the audibles now on the new yahoo messenger, it tells me I need the lastest version of flash, only I can not get the flash because of the activex thing being messed up. I went to pcpitstop site when i was searching for activex stuff, and all I see is the red x. I did every thing it said to do in my settings, everything is right, on med. I have searched every where for a solution and tried everything I have seen, even something about making sure that english was the right language. Everything looks right to me. What is going on? I am running XP and IE6 on a fairly new Dell dimension 2400. I have automatic updates for my windows stuff, oh yeah, I cant even get to the windows update site without getting an error there too. I was wondering if it had something maybe to do with sp2. Is that automatically downloaded? Because I read that there are supposed to be special instructions with that one. Wondering if that is maybe causing the problem? I looked in my add remove programs and didnt see sp2 in there, don't even know for sure if it even would be. So thanks for reading my winded post and please someone help me!!!!

I had this same problem after I installed Service Pack 2 ... but I don't really remember what I did. You can take a look at this Microsoft listing: http://support.microsoft.com/?id=816702 as well as http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;q223310
I think in my case it was that I was blocking the Active X components in my browser (MYIE2). You could try different browers or ensure that your browser is not blocking it. It could also be your firewall but you said you don't remember making any other changes.
Hang in there

Go to Start / Control Panel and then double click Internet Options. Click Security Tab on top. Highlight Internet and then click Custom Level on the bottom left corner.
Change the following settings to these:
Automatic prompting for ActiveX controls..... Disable
Download signed ActiveX controls................ Enable
Download unsigned ActiveX controls............ Disable
Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe.... Disable
Run ActiveX controls and plug-ins...... Enable
Script ActiveX controls marked safe for scripting...... Enable

What browser do you use? If you use a Mozilla browser, such as Firefox, you will notice some changes, such as some programs need a special Mozilla adapter.
I do agree with a previous respondent that if you set your internet settings to default or anything else to allow Active X then you should be able to get to the pages. But there are other variables: Such as you may have a particular site lset to be blocked.
What firewall are you using? That also get cause conflicts and may block some pages.
As I said before I changed my browser over to Internet Explorer to get access to some page but I hate using Internet Explorer.n But I think that if you set your internet options to the default settings as well as your firewall and try another browser (you don't have to switch to Mozilla) you should get access.
Hey, let us know what happens.

Hmmm. Have you tried other non-Mozilla browsers such as MYIE2 or Slim Browser or Avant? But usually IE is the most open. For example, I can't run PitStop on my MYIE2 because of the Active X problem so I have to use IE.
You could try reinstalling IE from Microsoft.
Also look at http://help.lockergnome.com/index.php?s=825c1989c2c640f6a5057341f6e70c24&showtopic=22893&st=0&#entry172854 and http://www.dslreports.com/faq/6676. Also, are you running as administrator?
Also, are all web pages with active X inaccessible or just some? Try the following PitStop test and it may help also
http://www.pcpitstop.com/testax.asp
Also, if you have switched to Mozilla you will probably learn to love it because it is so fast and it is also less vulnearable to security problems than Internet Explorer or IE-based browsers.

Regarding the SP2 issue, I didn't take any special precautions because I didn't know DELL had such a page. You could remove it and then reinstall it. If you could wait a week or so you could go to the Microsoft site and request a CD. That's what I did. It's good because you have a hard copy if you ever had to reinstall Windows and you don't have to wait for a download and run the risk, however sllight, of getting a corrupted download. I only have dial-up 56K modem so my download took some time.
I THINK, as I may have said, that I did run into some Active X problems after I downloaded and installed it but I am not certain. There are also some programs that will list what Active X you have installed. Do you run Spybot? IF you don't, you should because it and AdAware will take care of a lot of your spyware/adware problems Anyway, if you run SpyBot in the advanced method it will show you all of you Active Xs installed. There are other programs too of course.

Here is another thing that you can also safely do. I will like you to download and install Microsoft VM (Microsoft Virtual machine). Let me know thanks....

Got the virtual machine. Nothing is working right still. All netscape has done is make me able to use my yahoo audibles. I still cannot go to windows update site or anywhere there is activex. I can't even reinstall my msn messenger. Can anyone tell me how to go about uninstalling sp2? If you look on the first page of dell, you can see where it says things about things you should know b4 installing sp2. Well I didnt know that and I have auto updates like I said. So I really think its this sp2 thing. My screen saver wont even work right now, it wont move.
Thanks

Sorry to hear (read) of your continued problems.
Here is Microsoft's page http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;875350&Product=winxp
You should be able to simply uninstall it from the control panel. BUT you will have to checkmark the Show Updates listing, otherwise you won't see it.
Some other things to consider:
1. I assume you have System Restore set. Do you have a restore point that is valid before you installed SP2. If you don't know, you could just try the oldest one you have and see if anything good (or bad) happens.
2. At a last resort (or actually next-to-last resort) you could try a repair reinstallation of your XP. Supposedly it won't affect your personal settings, etc. However, I once tried it when I got hit by a virus or something else and the operation essentially froze and I couldn't do anything but a complete reinstall ... and of course I hadn't made backups. So that's why backups are always a good thing.
Again as I suggested, your download may have been corrupted. So you could order the XP disc FREE from Microsoft. I got mine in about four days.

Me again. You can discuss this with a friendly, knowledgable MSN techie for FREE. At least that's what the web page says.
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=fh;en-us;Prodoffer80&sd=GN
Also, you can try calling Dell tech support if your computer is still under warranty. They will likely refer you to Microsoft but you don't positively, absolutely know it's a SP2 problem. It sounds as it is because if you go through these and other forums you will find a lot of people are having a lot of problems.
If your ISP has a free tech help they may also be able to advise. I have MSN and the tech support is free. Others you have to pay for . It may not be SP2. Because I have had problems in the past where I couldn't connect and it was something wrong with my account at MSN and they had to reset my NetPassport.
So, ast least you have some free options and a chance to talk to people.
